Scotland's National Hand Hygiene Campaign was developed in conjunction with the Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) Task Force within the Scottish Government Health Directorate.

The aims of the 2010/11 phase of the campaign were:

  • To support NHS Boards as they work to achieve a zero tolerance to non-compliance with hand hygiene from January 2009 onwards through provision of expertise, awareness raising and relevant, approved materials
  • To provide the Scottish Government Healthcare Directorate with bi-monthly hand hygiene audit reports

In addition to this a public media campaign was launched in January 2009, a professional campaign for staff within NHS Scotland launched in March 2009 and a dedicated NHSScotland community campaign implemented in February 2010.

In a wider international context, the National Hand Hygiene Campaign liaised with the World Health Organization's first Global Patient Safety Challenge (Clean Care is Safer Care). Their permission for allowing our materials to be based on their '5 moments for hand hygiene' is gratefully acknowledged.
